Bloom Showcase: April Pembleton, Design Intern

March 15, 2024

Earlier this year we welcomed April Pembleton who joined us for a design internship after co-winning the Diageo brief for D&AD Shift 2022. Here’s how she got on.

What I've learnt

I've learnt so much whist at Bloom, and I genuinely don't think I could have asked for a better first internship. It has been so interesting to see how projects move through the studio and how they're approached by different roles. I've worked on many different projects and learnt how to approach each of them more efficiently and built on my typography knowledge, learning how to craft my own letterforms. I'm going to continue sketching ideas out in the initial stages of a project, and being able to build and use my After Effects skills has been so useful. I've discovered that I enjoy creative strategy, and I'm looking forward to finding out more to see if it's something I would want to do in the future.

Proudest moment

Sometimes you can get caught up in focusing on the hard skills or the physical work you create. But actually, I'm most proud of the way I've collaborated and connected with people. It can be easy to sit quietly and not say much. So I wanted to make sure I asked as much as I could and spoke to different people about their creative specialties. I've spoken to illustrators, strategists, art workers, senior designers, and directors. Every conversation I've had has been so interesting, helpful, and inspiring. It really helped me to feel like I had immersed myself in the experience.

What's next

I'm excited to see where my creative career takes me. I'm looking forward to any new challenges and meeting all new people that are in the industry. I aspire to work in a studio similar to Bloom, with other great creatives that share my enthusiasm for producing awesome work.
